UNICEF saves children’s lives, defends their rights, and helps them fulfil their potential. We never give up 🌍.

About us

UNICEF is the driving force that helps build a world where the rights of every child are realized. We have the global authority to influence decision-makers, and a variety of partners at grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. This makes us unique among world organizations, and unique among those working with the young. We believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind—to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. We believe that we can, together, advance the cause of humanity. We advocate for measures to give children the best start in life, because proper care at the youngest age forms the strongest foundation for a person’s future. We promote girls’ education—ensuring that they complete primary education as a minimum—because it benefits all children, both girls and boys. Girls who are educated grow up to become better thinkers, better citizens, and better parents to their own children. We act so that all children are immunized against common childhood diseases, and are well nourished, because it is wrong for a child to suffer or die from a preventable illness. We work to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS among young people, because it is right to keep them from harm and enable them to protect themselves and others. We help children and families affected by HIV/AIDS to live their lives with dignity. We involve everyone in creating protective environments for children. We are present to relieve suffering during emergencies, and wherever children are threatened. Because no child should be exposed to violence, abuse or exploitation. UNICEF upholds the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We work to assure equality for all those who are discriminated against, girls and women in particular.

𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀! ④⑤ learners from Teya-teyaneng successfully completed the Waste Mapping course on the YOMA platform and took action by participating in a community clean-up. This was part of the “YOMA Clean Up” initiatives inspired by World Clean Up Day. The #YOMA platform, a UNICEF initiative under Generation Unlimited (GenU), empowers young people to make a social and environmental impact while building skills for a “work-life ready” future. Through the YOMA Waste Mapping Challenge, youth learn to identify waste hotspots using digital tools, earn verifiable digital credentials, and organize clean-up activities in their communities. 𝗬𝗢𝗠𝗔’𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻-𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀: ✅ Connecting youth with opportunities to learn, earn, and make an impact. ✅ Training young people in digital skills to map waste and organize clean-up activities. ✅ Partnering with local organizations to mobilize youth to actively clean their communities. • Yesterday, Lesotho took a significant step towards safeguarding its youngest citizens with the launch of the Child-Friendly Communities Initiative, under the call to action #EsengKaNgoana (“Not at the Expense of the Child”). Held in Mafeteng, the day began with a symbolic fun walk before moving into a showcase of integrated child-friendly services. Community health workers, nutritionists, and other service providers demonstrated how holistic care can be delivered safely and inclusively, from nutrition screening and immunization to dental care and counselling. Voices of leaders, alongside songs and community messages, reinforced a simple but powerful truth: children’s rights are non-negotiable. The initiative is led by the Ministry of Health, in partnership with UNICEF, WHO Lesotho and other stakeholders, with financial support from the Government of Monaco and the European Union Humanitarian Aid (ECHO). By strengthening health services, empowering communities, and building accountability across sectors, #EsengKaNgoana seeks to reduce preventable child deaths, end harmful practices, and create safe spaces where children can thrive. This launch is a reminder that protecting children is more than a health priority; it is a national responsibility, requiring united action from government, civil society, and communities. #EsengKaNgoana #ForEveryChild

  • In Lesotho, too many learners move through grades without mastering literacy and numeracy. Thanks to the support of the Global Partnership for Education and UNICEF, the Lesotho National Assessment of Educational Progress (LNAEP) is giving teachers and policymakers the evidence they need to act. With this evidence, the Ministry of Education and Training is reshaping teaching, empowering parents, and strengthening support for #EveryChild’s learning journey. 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
