UNICEF saves children’s lives, defends their rights, and helps them fulfil their potential. We never give up 🌍.

About us

UNICEF is the driving force that helps build a world where the rights of every child are realized. We have the global authority to influence decision-makers, and a variety of partners at grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. This makes us unique among world organizations, and unique among those working with the young. We believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind—to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. We believe that we can, together, advance the cause of humanity. We advocate for measures to give children the best start in life, because proper care at the youngest age forms the strongest foundation for a person’s future. We promote girls’ education—ensuring that they complete primary education as a minimum—because it benefits all children, both girls and boys. Girls who are educated grow up to become better thinkers, better citizens, and better parents to their own children. We act so that all children are immunized against common childhood diseases, and are well nourished, because it is wrong for a child to suffer or die from a preventable illness. We work to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS among young people, because it is right to keep them from harm and enable them to protect themselves and others. We help children and families affected by HIV/AIDS to live their lives with dignity. We involve everyone in creating protective environments for children. We are present to relieve suffering during emergencies, and wherever children are threatened. Because no child should be exposed to violence, abuse or exploitation. UNICEF upholds the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We work to assure equality for all those who are discriminated against, girls and women in particular.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘀-𝗥𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗼! After a strong start yesterday, Day 2 sees even more caregivers bringing their children to health facilities and outreach sites for their measles-rubella vaccine, a simple but powerful step to protect them from preventable diseases. From Tele to Mechechane, health workers, communities, and partners are working tirelessly to ensure every child aged 0–59 months receives free, life-saving protection, including Vitamin A, Albendazole, and OPV. This national effort, led by the Ministry of Health with support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, UNICEF Lesotho , and World Health Organization Lesotho, continues to demonstrate the power of partnership and community action in safeguarding the health of #EveryChild. Let’s keep the momentum strong — spread the word, remind caregivers, and make sure #NoChildIsLeftBehind. A healthier, safer Lesotho starts with every child vaccinated. 💙 #VaccinesWork #ForEveryChildVaccines

  • 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 #𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗼 Last week marked two major milestones in Lesotho’s ongoing efforts to protect every child from vaccine-preventable diseases. On 16 October, the Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Nthomeng Majara, officially launched the national Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign in Quthing District, reaffirming government’s commitment to safeguard the health of Basotho children. The Deputy Prime Minister urged parents and caregivers, village health workers, health personnel, and community leaders to ensure that every child under five is vaccinated and protected from measles and rubella. With support from World Health Organization Lesotho, UNICEF Lesotho, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and other partners, the MR campaign officially kicks off today, 𝟮𝟬 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟰 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 2025, aiming to ensure that every child aged 𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝟱𝟵 months is reached with life-saving vaccines and Vitamin A for boosted immunity. In another milestone for child health, the Right Honourable Prime Minister, Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, together with the Minister of Health, officially opened the newly constructed Thaba-Tseka District Vaccine Store — a landmark project implemented by the Ministry of Health and UNICEF Lesotho with support from the Government of Japan under the Japan Emergency Grant Aid. Built to WHO standards, the modern facility strengthens Lesotho’s vaccine storage and distribution capacity, a critical step in Japan’s “Last Mile” strategy to ensure equitable access to life-saving vaccines across Africa. These achievements underscore Lesotho’s determination to build a healthier, more resilient future for every child.

  • Yesterday, Lesotho took a significant step towards safeguarding its youngest citizens with the launch of the Child-Friendly Communities Initiative, under the call to action #EsengKaNgoana (“Not at the Expense of the Child”). Held in Mafeteng, the day began with a symbolic fun walk before moving into a showcase of integrated child-friendly services. Community health workers, nutritionists, and other service providers demonstrated how holistic care can be delivered safely and inclusively, from nutrition screening and immunization to dental care and counselling. Voices of leaders, alongside songs and community messages, reinforced a simple but powerful truth: children’s rights are non-negotiable. The initiative is led by the Ministry of Health, in partnership with UNICEF, WHO Lesotho and other stakeholders, with financial support from the Government of Monaco and the European Union Humanitarian Aid (ECHO). By strengthening health services, empowering communities, and building accountability across sectors, #EsengKaNgoana seeks to reduce preventable child deaths, end harmful practices, and create safe spaces where children can thrive. This launch is a reminder that protecting children is more than a health priority; it is a national responsibility, requiring united action from government, civil society, and communities. #EsengKaNgoana #ForEveryChild

  • In Lesotho, too many learners move through grades without mastering literacy and numeracy. Thanks to the support of the Global Partnership for Education and UNICEF, the Lesotho National Assessment of Educational Progress (LNAEP) is giving teachers and policymakers the evidence they need to act. With this evidence, the Ministry of Education and Training is reshaping teaching, empowering parents, and strengthening support for #EveryChild’s learning journey. 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
